Wynwood Diner & Cocktails
Hi Uncle Steve,
We finally had our first dinner on the AmEx gift card we received from you for Christmas (hence the subject line). For this meal, we went to Wynwood Diner and Cocktails, which I suppose is a diner in the broadest sense of that word, but otherwise makes excellent cocktails.
Which is where we started. I ordered a Diner Fizz, the one on the left. Lauren ordered a Long Tall Sally, on the right.
I'd try to describe what they're made of, but that's a bit complicated, so here's the drink menu:
In terms of whether we enjoyed them, the Long Tall Sally was exceptional and highly recommended. It's a great summer drink, thin, boozy, a little sweet and a little spicy, but over ice. The Diner Fizz was very good, but a bit out of season. The dominant flavors there come together in a combination more appropriate for December, or at least a city much colder than Miami. Later in the meal, I also ordered The GQ. Essentially a very nice gin and tonic, it was a very nice gin and tonic. But, I did not personally care for the gin chosen as the flavors infused there entirely overwhelmed the remainder of the cocktail. There was a lemon slice and a sprig of rosemary in it, but they did not initially contribute to the flavor at all. I used a spoon to muddle the two in the drink and the flavors counterbalanced the gin, making it much better. So, promising, but missing execution. Or I just hate that brand of gin.
For an appetizer, we ordered the fried heirloom tomatoes. Unlike its Southern cousin, this dish was not made from underripe green tomatoes, but ripe ones. The batter was excellent and fried to perfection. It was topped by a dill ranch sauce and a few sprigs of microgreens.
For our entrees, Lauren ordered the Steak Frites. Of course, prior to ordering, we had took look it up. It turns out that Steak Frites is not "steak fries" but "steak [and] fries" and apparently is the national dish of both Belgium and, surprisingly, France. The fries were hand cut in house and very fresh with no skin on the ends. The steak was also very good and, surprisingly for such a thin cut, was not overcooked (if anything, it may have been slightly undercooked).
I ordered the Fat Boy burger. The burger, which itself was very good, was topped with bacon, Gruyere, an egg, and pink sauce. The toppings were all of very high quality. The burger was very good and quite the treat. The bun appeared to be in house. The pickles were also great. The side kale salad though was quite exceptional and the treat. Unlike many such salads, the kale was (relatively) finely chopped, which meant it was light and easier to chew through.
Now, unlike most of these meals, the portions were appropriately small enough we could eat dessert. So we got something with Nutella. No, really, it's called Something With Nutella. Scroll back up and look at the main menu. See? I'll leave my review to the picture:
Delicious.
Highly recommended. Also, somewhat cheaper than a lot of the other nice dinners we have in Miami.
{P.S. The images on this post ended up breaking, so they have been removed for now.}
